Rates are a hot topic once more, with Council rate notices received recently all over the state. Nine News Melbourne reported one Bass Coast resident receiving a rate increase in excess of 60%!
7 News Melbourne is also warning of increases up to 50% across the State, and Ratepayers Victoria speak about large increases in property valuations affecting rates. There’s also news of a push to remove the Fair Go Rate Capping system (introduced in 2016).
If you are not happy with the change in your property valuation, you may lodge a written objection to that valuation via this link https://ratingvaluationobjections.vic.gov.au/.
The grounds for an objection are set out in the Valuation of Land Act 1960 s17 – page 79 and the first of these is
(a) that the value assigned is too high or too low;
An objection must be lodged within 2 months after the notice of valuation is given.
