Island Voice would like to congratulate the successful candidates for Bass Coast Shire Council for running such positive campaigns and particularly Ronnie Bauer, Tracey Bell and Tim O’Brien, on being elected to represent the Island Ward.
It is significant that the returned incumbents, in each ward, were those who had listened to their communities and motivated for the things that were important to that community
The initial period of a new team of Councillors is when they set the tone for their term of office. Council Watch has identified 7 points to help new Councillors provide transparent, accountable and financially responsible representation for the community. There are some really good points here for our new Councillors to ponder during these first days in their new role (the EMPHASES are from CW).
- Change governance rules to permit open questions in council meetings from the public and Publish ALL meeting minutes (every committee, every delegated body, every informal meeting) and notes.
- Lower the CEO spending delegation limit by 50%
- Ensure that all Senior employee expenses are reviewed and approved PUBLICLY by the Councillor group, not the CEO.
- Abolish Citizens panels and consultative committees immediately – they are but a confected proxy for officers anyway.
- Pass a motion to ban any external paid consultant over $100k – unless approved by council resolution.
- Set NEW CEO and Senior Management KPI’s – clear PUBLIC KPI’s to improve service delivery and community satisfaction, or no pay increases.
- Scrap all meals and expensive catering from Council meetings (if relevant).
Island Voice looks forward to working with the new team of Councillors to achieve the campaign promises they made to the electorate and to seeing them prioritising the urgent needs of the community.
