Rubbish

Q. What is your opinion of current rubbish collection schedules during peak holiday periods?

Ron BauerMy advocey on this issue is well known. In the last 4 years I have tried 3 times to address the picking up of the red bin from Christmas to Australia Day. Cr Rooks and Cr Whelen opposed me on all three occasions. If I am elected I will again move to have the landfill (red bin), recycle bin (yellow bin) and Fogo (green bin) picked up every week from Christmas to Australia day. Phillip Island is a tourist haven. The pickup are essential. I will also move that we have 1 free hard rubbish pickup each year. Rubbish is one of our 3 core responsibilities.  Firstly we have to budget for the 3Rs +recreation in place then everything else is a bonus  for our community.
John TrigtGiven the huge increase of families that come down to the Island during holiday period it is vital to increase the number of collections during that period, so I would be pushing for more collection especially the Red bin during this time.
Marnie ChadwickI will advocate for weekly red bin pick-ups during January / Christmas time.
Tracey BellIn my conversations with community members, rubbish collection schedules haven’t been top of mind in their issues.  It’s only other candidates who have made this an issue.  I would support measures that encourage less waste.  I think the bigger issue is having the holiday home bins out from Sunday night to Friday night with rubbish allowed to be strewn all over the streets.
David RooksAll year, as residents, we manage with the alternate week of the red bin.  If we provide the appropriate internal bins in all short stay accommodation and educate tourists / holiday homes owners on the importance of using the right bin than I believe our current holiday collection is manageable.
Darrell SilvaMy opinion is that the current rubbish collection over the holiday period is grossly deficient.  The sight of garbage strewn across the landscape is an eyesore and health hazard.

All three bins should be collected weekly from Christmas to Australia Day.  One only needs to understand that the population increases by 3x over the holidays and so there is 3x the quantity of rubbish.  The increase is typically concentrated in the vacation  homes, but also with the addition of friends and family to a normal household.
There is no need to wait to the end of a contract to negotiate a new one.  The excuse of “no funds”, “not budgeted” etc shows poor negotiation skills.
