Parking

Q. How would you provide a parking solution in Cowes that does not disadvantage our older residents and businesses?

Ron BauerI am on the record for trying to force the Council officers to look at the parking problems for the Island and especially Cowes. Cr Rooks and Cr Whelen did not support me on the motion I lost it 5-4. Currently Phillip Island/Millowl is part of the Integrated Transport study which is Shire wide.  We must not remove any of the existing carpark spots in Thompson Avenue. We desperately need to expand the Transit Centre carpark. There also needs to be more wheelchair disabled spots in Thompson Avenue. The car parks at the Rhyll and Cowes boat ramps need to be re-signed from cars with trailers only to single cars. That way people can use the beaches without clogging up the footpaths. This is a must when the brewery in Rhyll is built. When the hospital is fully operational and the new Isle of Wight hotel is built and the Cultural Centre has an event the Transit Centre will not cope. The transit centre needs to be one more level down and an extra level up. The way to achieve this is through a public/private partnership.
Darrell SilvaReduce parking waivers, maintain existing parking in Thompson Ave, look to multi-storey in Transit centre, ensure appropriate number of disabled parking spots are available. Use car and trailer parking at boat ramps for car parking at off-peak fishing times.
Marnie ChadwickThere needs to be a parking plan which caters for parking spaces for permitted parking and longer parking bays in close proximity to the shopping areas. I believe parking bays need to be wider than normal and I will be advocating this.
Tracey BellMore disabled spots are needed; parking waivers need to be fully explained to the community as to why they are given; safer bike, scooter and footpaths for people to use as an alternative to driving into the Cowes centre; shuttle buses between townships, again as an alternative people driving into Cowes – these do not need to be the full-size buses, but mini buses would probably be sufficient, so long as they run regularly.
David RooksMore all access (disabled) and short term parking close to businesses.   Providing more active and public transport options.
John TrigtHonestly, I would suggest a multi- level parking area from Chapel Street to the Isle of White building block be produced. It could be a public/private project. Cowes being made up of older residents, are dependent on our cars due to lack of public transport, they quire all the parking they can get. Council must stop waiving parking requirements for projects such as the Island of Wight, just one of many.
