Q. What is your position on providing fenced dog parks (in addition to existing off-leash areas) in Bass Coast Shire?

Ron Bauer | The Recreation reserve has in its masterplan a large enclosed dog park. The Phillip Island Bass Coast Dog Association has worked tirelessly to get that started at the Hilton/Chadwick reserve. The area that Cr Rooks proposed for this was too small and totally inappropriate. Dogs need a large area to run. I support the large enclosed dog park. This doesn’t need rezoning. This can be built now. I will include it in the upcoming budget process. I also successfully moved to extend the off leash dog run on the West Cowes beach from the Cowes Yacht club to the Cowes boat ramp. |
John Trigt | We have come up with a Recreation Master Plan that has quite a large off leash area, I would again suggest Council needs to develop the Recreation precinct NOW not delaying it for another 10 – 20 years. |
Marnie Chadwick | I am in favour of a fenced dog park, and ensuring dogs are on leashes in streets. |
Tracey Bell | Fenced dog parks create community among the dog owning population and for some older people who live alone, the social contact that they get through taking their dog to the park is vital to their well-being. Fenced dog parks provide safe spaces for people to run their dogs and we don’t have a single one on Phillip Island. There are a couple of options that the Dog Owners Association have put forward to council and I think it’s really important we get those options investigated and one of them taken. There’s a strong lobby group against dogs on beaches but with no alternative it’s not fair to the dogs and their owners. |
David Rooks | Very keen to have inland fenced dog parks throughout our shire |
Darrell Silva | Dogs are an important element for the maintenance of mental health, particularly as people seek companionship and to exercise. There is space allocated for an enclosed dog park in the master plan for the recreation reserve. I see no barrier to accelerating this facility, as there is no need for re-zoning of the land, as I understand it. Need to accelerate devpt. of fenced dog park in Cowes Rec Reserve |
